New Documentary Project to Explore the Story of the Nepean River

Made in the West Creative is about to commence production on a new documentary film celebrating one of Western Sydney’s most significant cultural and environmental landmarks — the Nepean River, known as Yandhai to the local Dharug people.

Hosted by Olympic slalom canoeist Noemie Fox and produced in collaboration with Paddle Australia, this project brings together local voices to explore the river’s importance to the region — past, present, and future. With Paddle Australia now on board as a major sponsor, we are excited to begin filming in September 2025, coinciding with the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships at Penrith Whitewater Stadium.

This film will trace the rich history of our river — from its long-standing cultural significance to the Dharug people, to its central role in the development of modern paddle sports, community life, and the Olympic legacy of the Penrith Regatta Centre. The documentary will showcase the many ways this river continues to shape identity and opportunity across Western Sydney, flowing through the local government areas of Penrith, Camden, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury.

A Community Story, Told by a Local Team

At Made in the West Creative, we are a social enterprise dedicated to creating opportunities for local artists and building capacity within Western Sydney’s creative industries. This documentary is being developed and produced by a skilled team of filmmakers based in the west — many from the Penrith region — whose connection to place and professional expertise bring authenticity, depth and local insight to the storytelling process.

The project will feature interviews with Indigenous elders, historians, sporting figures, environmental advocates, and local business owners — each offering a unique perspective on the river’s role in the life of the region. From traditional ‘nawi’ canoes and the heritage of the Dharug nation, to the construction of Olympic sporting facilities and the return of world-class competition to Western Sydney in 2025, the film will unpack how this waterway became such a vital artery for community, sport and culture.

An Invitation to Local Businesses and Partners

We’re excited to be working with Paddle Australia and our production partners Fox & Co, and we’re keen to hear from other local businesses and stakeholders who’d like to support the project or contribute to its story. Whether you have a historical connection to the river, a unique riverside location, or an interest in backing local storytelling — we welcome your involvement.

Filming will take place throughout September and October, with the final cut due for release in early 2025. We are planning a community screening to celebrate the voices of our contributors and highlight the collaboration that brought this project to life.
